Struck By Lightning.
No, I don't mean literally, although I am going to be soaked when I head over to Albury for training tonight. *pulls a face* I mean the sudden inspiration, the story or RR idea that suddenly hits you when you least expect it. Mine tend to happen just when I lie down to go to sleep, or just before I wake up fully, but sometimes they can hit at work, on my bike, any where... And when they do, I either have to scribble them down straight away, or reiterate them in my head until I can get them down on paper.
Disclaimer; the next part refers to a THOSD Round Robin. If you have no interest in such things, move along, there's nothign to see. And kindly don't insult me in my comments section - I happen to enjoy it and it doesn't hurt anyone, so I don't want to hear your negative opinions on what I do in my free time, purely for enjoyment. So there. :P
The reason why I'm bringing this up is because I got hit with one of those last night, just as I'd turned out the light to sleep. People had been asking me to post to the latest THOSD RR, and I just couldn't come up with anything. RR fatigue, after the last one: I can't do too many epics, or I burn out any originality I have. :P But I was pondering the posts that had been done - I'd spent an hour or two compiling before I went to bed - turning over several problems in my mind; the House disappearing, and what the consequences would be, Jesse's suitcase subplot, and how to incorporate it, how to avoid shameless twinking as per the last RR (the guilty will remain nameless). And then it hit me. If the House was removed from Subreality, then it would mean Writer's Powers would no longer work. Avatars would no longer work. So everyone becomes just as they are in RL. The House remains the same, because the only way to use the Key is through the House - that's my Key, any way, the others I don't know about yet. Another thought, which could incorporate Hush's Mist idea - who's to say the Keys are in the hands of a villain any way? It could be someone trying to keep them safe from Mist, or someone neutral, who bears neither party ill-will, but somehow has stmbled upon the Keys that were forgotten last RR. Hmm, could be something to play with...
End of THOSD RR discussion.
Any way, there I am, trying to sort out my idea in my head, and I'm finding I'm writing the post already, mentally (I do that). I'm bound to forget half of it by the morning, and I wouldn't have time to write until after work, so there's nothing for it to turn the light back on and grab the spare notepad sitting on my bedside table. Only there's no pen. I make a dive at my courier bag slung over my chair, and scrabble around in the pockets, finding a blunt pencil, which works fine until I blunt it completely (I press down hard when I handwrite). I dive for the handbag on the floor, and find a pen, but alas! it's the one that ran out on the train home last time I went to Melbourne. Another dive, another rummage, and I find another pencil, this one with enough point to finish the post.
Obsessed? Me? Never!
In other news: Yesterday I used Shai's birthday present voucher, ordering two books (okay, so I went over the voucher and have to shell out some money myself - last indulgence, I promise!). Welcome To The Monkey House by Kurt Vonnegut, which Doc Benway suggested I read at one point and I've been vainly searching for in libraries and bookstores ever since, and a Neil Gaiman co-write, The Last Temptation. And there's another new Gaiman coming out in June - American Gods which could prove interesting, but I can't afford that one yet. I may have to wait until after Dexcon and my credit card's back up to speed. Along with the two CDs I want, Dar Williams, and The Lowest of The Low, a Canadian outfit, who wrote the song "Rosy and Grey" that I mentioned in a previous journal entry. I used Amazon's search function to find the album, and have the names of both safely written down this time. :P
In money matters... Yipe. I went to the chook machine (that's the ATM, for the uninitiated *g*) today to get out the rent money and my 'allowance' for this week and my account's down to $800-odd. Not bad in itself, but it was $1500 two weeks ago. Fuck. I'm really going to have to watch my spending, especially if I'm going to be eating whilst I'm over in Canada. I have to clear my credit card without actually bankrupting myself. And no more trips to Melbourne, until the actual "flying out from Melbourne Airport" one. If I scrimp I can make my allowance ($100) last a couple of weeks, provided no big bills come in. A pox on the Border Mail's horoscope - it was predicting something like this. (j/k - I don't really believe that stuff - much). ;)
Bugger bugger bugger bugger. I hate not being able to do the stuff I want because I don't have the money. :P
At least the ISP is paid up for the next three months - the account came through in May, just before I bought the tickets, so that's one less worry. I won't get another until after I get back, hopefully. I'll try and keep some space on the card any way, just in case.
*looks out the window* And it is raining again. Damn. But I can't skip training again - I've only been the once, and they must think I'm not serious.
Brr. My feet are freezing.
