Chalk another up to experience...

I got a phone call just before lunch - I've missed out on the two Heidelberg positions. One of the guys from here (he sits next to me, actually) got one, and another guy from elsewhere got the other. And I don't begrudge either - Ben's younger than me in terms of the job, but he's very much the go-getter. The registrar in charge of the interviews told me I could call him about the interview next week, which I will do - I need to know how to improve my interviewing technique. Still, I'm glad to have gotten that far - some of the other applicants are quite the big-shots in the Department.

So yeah, live and learn. Ah well, there's always stuff coming up, so I'll just keep plugging away at it. If nothing comes of it by August, I'll look out of the Department. Unless something comes up beforehand, that is.

I can't remember if you're religious or not, but there's a saying in "The Sound of Music": When the Lord closes a door, he opens a window. It's easy to make it apply to all sorts of situations, including me not getting the filing editor job in Emeryville so I could take the associate editor job in New York. Depending on how much faith you have, it can be very comforting indeed.
