A bit of wankery...
So, [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com] is talking about contributions to fanfiction in her LJ, and I thought, 'hey, why not?' Especially when I have an application awaiting me that is going to require some fiddling around before I get to the nitty gritty of it.
Before I start this, I will say this: I'm being a bad Australian. It's against the law in this country to talk about how good you are in more than the general "Aussies Rule!" sense, so this could get kind of awkward. Hence the title, which is, I assure you, very tongue in cheek and not meant to insult [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com] or anyone else who follows suit. Okay? Good.
So disclaimer over, cut for your reading convenience,
Whilst I have dabbled in other fandoms (B:tVS, LotR, an unfinished anime fic and some unwritten ideas for same), the bulk of my fanfic is comic. And Subreality, which is kind of related. I'm not sure why - it was the one I started in, back in 1997-ish, and the one I continue to enjoy despite the backbiting and splintering and general evil-ness people keep accusing us of. For me, it's still mainly about the writing. (Well, that and I do the community thing with the Aussie ficcers mostly, who tend to get distracted by shiny conversations and don't hold grudges and who all agree with each other any way *grins*) But this is steering towards another tangent I've been thinking about lately and haven't gotten straight enough in my head to write about yet, so I'll go back to the topic.
I'd say there are a few things I've done that have influence my fandom(s). Collective Mutants, Suffer the Children, and pretty much my entire run of Subreality stories.
Collective Mutants basically reminded people that there is more to the TCP genre than angst and FOH attacks. It also reminded people that both the Marvelverse and the ficcer community are not just American, and that it's okay to write what you know, even if what you know isn't the US.
Suffer the Children. This thing's won more awards than I can remember, and has been cited (not by me!) as being responsible for raising the profile of Hellblazer as well as the crime thriller as a fanfic genre. Constantine-as-occult-detective is a favourite role of mine, and I'm glad I decided to write this.
Subreality... Not long ago someone emailed me and told me that whilst I don't get much in the way of actual feedback these days, I can't deny the impact I've had on Subreality. As Kielle started withdrawing from comicfic and Subreality, I was posting regularly, actively participating in RRs and moderating THOSD (and this is still their words, not mine). I pretty much jumpstarted the Muse genre (yes, it was me, feel free to throw stuff), by creating Frank and writing a bunch of stories about him that people enjoyed, and then followed suit, forming what I call in my head the Be-Mused writers. Phil Foster and I started the SCPD with a series of joke fics written about the Angst Squad. And I'm pretty sure I was the first Subreality writer to write a stand-alone story based on events in an RR.
*looks back* Wow. Next time I'm in need of validation, I think I'd better read this.
Okay, highly un-Australian boasting over. I'd better get back to work, especially since we're pretty short-staffed today (several off sick and a few on leave) and the call centre doesn't seem to be able to deal with customers on their own today. :P Have a good one, all.
Oh, and the usual request for conversation stands - I can only do so many of these applications before my brain melts. ;)
