Pro cyclists bounce
Some days you wonder why you get out of bed at all. *wry grin*
I got collected by a 4WD/SUV today on my way to work. One minute I'm merrily pedalling down Barkly Street and joining with the Nepean Highway, the next there's a silver flash in my vision and something hard and unyielding and car-like contacting with my shoulder and front wheel and the next thing I know there's the road getting intimate with my left side.
Nothing broken. *points to subject header* I've got a rather spectacular graze on my left elbow, another on my hip bone with also has a rather impressive bruise, and more bruising on my left thigh. And a rather annoying blood blister on my right thumb, right where I hit the space bar. :P The bike looks okay, although I need to give it a once-over once I get it back. The driver not only stopped, he took me to the Emergency Ward of the Alfred Hospital to get checked over, and took care of the bike for me since I was kind of spaced at the time. Shock is so much fun.
So, I'm going to malinger on the couch today, since it's easier than staggering around saying "ouch" every time I move the wrong part, and I'll be back at work tomorrow. All I can say is, thank god for ten years of martial arts training, because I couldn't have hit the road any more safely than I did.
And to reiterate, mostly for my mum who is having kittens after I called her to tell her, I'M OKAY. Really.

As for what happened... The place where it happened is not the best intersection in the world - Barkly St feeds into a four lane highway with a sort of slipway kind of thing. There's a bike lane in the middle, which is where I was. The bloke claims he just didn't see me, and pulled across in front of/into me. Definitely not my fault, very likely him not taking enough care to look.

I agree - I don't think cycling is particularly dangerous (no more than driving, anyway). Unfortunately, there's not much you can do about idiots. And I'm getting MUCH better about making rude gestures as I ride *g*.
