DexCon Memories... such as they are.

See, the thing about ficcer gatherings is that you're enjoying yourself so much that you don't really pay attention to things. And you certainly don't sit down and make notes. So most of this will be the things I remember, my personal highlights, as it were. Besides, it would be impossible (and repetitive) for me to actually do a day-by-day report of the Dexcon happenings, so I'll take the easy way out. But just for something completely different, I'm sorting memories by people associations, since I can safely say I spoke to everyone there at least once. The benefits of being the official GreetPixie. Even if I'm still finding glitter everywhere from those wings - BTW, someone had better have gotten a pic of that.

Alicia McKenzie: a major case of deja-vu as we found ourselves camped out in the lobby of the Holiday Inn On King once again. This was infinitely cool, as it meant I had her to myself for a bit, at least until we had gathered enough people to make a trip to the B&B. Ali as Native Guide. *chuckles* I get such a kick out of talking to people smarter than me (a recurring theme for the Con) and Ali has a most wicked sense of humour under the sweet exterior. Oh, and she took an advance party of us (me, Dex, Lise, Sascha, Chandri, KJ, Jim, Brucha and Mike) to the ROM, which was fun. I so want a postcard of the silver phoenix sculpture hanging in one of the halls - absolutely beautiful.

Sascha: Most of the memories associated with Sass involve purple hair and being flopped on - Sass is a big human-shaped Norweigan kitty. Another one of those quiet ones, and an absolute trooper in Toronto's heatwave, considering it rarely gets above high twenties where she lives in Norway. Oh, and I got to sleep with her too. *grins and ducks* And yes, you do hug the wall, Sass; I saw it myself. And she won't wake up for anything short of Armageddon- not even the fire alarm that went off at four am Saturday morning.

Matt Nute: It's only fitting I should mention Matt now, since it was him that got us out of bed at 7.30am, the same morning of the 4.00am fire alarm. We'd gotten to bed at 2.00am (something of a habit for the whole three weeks), and I remember lying in bed listening to some bastards being obnoxiously loud in the car park and heaping much mental invective on them. I like meeting Matt in person - he has less of a tendency to act like a prick. *playfully punches Matt in the arm* And next year I'm challenging you to Scrabble - none of this getting at you through 'Raph. *grins* Oh, and the bakery! I think this came out of my somewhat tipsy explanation of certain ficcers being like chocolate fudge cake laid before someone and then telling them they can't have any - "I'm in a bakery!" was Matt's constant wail in the Bordello that was the hostel. At some stages I thought I'd stumbled into a Moulin Rouge spoof.

Red Monster: Someone I'd spoken to rarely online, but who ended up in my lap the first night at Casey's. And I got to see her flash Dex at Niagra, which startled me more than him, I think. *grins* My other Red Monster association is of talking to Ali and KJ about polar bears in the northern parts of Canada, and her telling me how in summer they'll pounce on and devour anything that moves - "Like a Red Monster on a packet of Tim Tams", was my analogy. Red is proof that Tim Tams have a medicinal value. ;)

KJ: *collapses into incoherent fangirl burblings* When I started in fanfic, KJ's Kai and Logan series was one of the first things I read. So I admit to already being a KJ groupie. Meeting her in person cemented it. KJ associations... talking politics with her and Dex in the airport bar, at his place, on the subway... basically everywhere. Borrowing her most nifty black coat to complete the Trinity outfit at the B&B after the formal dinner - I already had the boots and pants on, it was just a matter of changing tops. Me fucking up the Tensho kata in the park after Myles' talk, when the Silver Snail was too much temptation for my overloaded credit card and so I stayed away and played with people in the fountain. Being told that I wasn't going home after all, I was coming back to SoCal with her: among the many propositions I got during the Con. I also became the chief wife in at least two harems. ;)

Mel: I love Mel. To bits. And I must call her back again tonight, after missing her last night. Lessee, Mel-associations... Playing "You Sound Like Louis Burdett" by The Witlams in the hostel one morning, using my antique CD player and her brother's plug-in speakers and laughing as people's eyebrows shot up at the chorus... "All my friends are fuck-ups, but they're fun to have around..." Collapsing on her in the hotel foyer after that very long, very, very long first day checking people in and her getting me a bottle of water from the hotel staff through judicious use of Australian Cuteness. Talking fanfic revolution with Matt and Tap and Mel in the hostel, and laughing at Matt's Messiah Complex (love ya, Matt, really *grin*). The Quick Fuck joke. All of the Aussies doing the "AUSSIE! AUSSIE! AUSSIE! OI! OI! OI!" chant in the B&B (Lynx desperately trying to escape our incredible dagginess all the while *chuckles*). Sharing a table with her and 'rith and the Smiths and Brucha and QB and Curly Jo at the formal (sorry if I've forgotten anyone!). And knowing that I'll see her again in November, which made the goodbye at the airport easier.

Enough for a start - don't want to overload you guys. I'm going to be offline tomorrow night: Paula and I are running Corryong court on Thursday, about 140km away from Wodonga, which means we'll be driving there after work tomorrow and staying in a hotel at the Department's expense. Makes me wish I had that iBook I've been planning on getting to replace/assist Tosh. So I'm going to have to take the notepad with me and make more notes. Two nights in my own bed, and I'm off again. *sigh*

Rossi! While you were gone and far away in Canada, I learned even MORE kata. . .I know Heian shodan, nidan, sandan, yodan, and godan now, and I just learned Bassai and Hangetsu. :) I'm pitiful at bassai and hangetsu, but hey, i just learned 'em tonight.

Heee.
