Music in the key of Mook.
This is in response to Kielle's Romantic Songs thread. Rather than cluttering up her LJ, I thought I'd post mine here. It took me a few days of thinking, but these are the songs that really, really grab me, the ones that go straight for the mook centres in my brain and render me a pile of pink slushy goo.

"What Is Love?" Howard Jones.
Curse you, Mice, for ressurecting this one on the mental playlist (although I'd dug the tape I have of this out a few weeks ago). I adored this song in high school, and it still gives me shivers.

"Fingers of Love" Crowded House.
This one has Connotations. Big Connotations. Every time I hear this, I remember the live show on Valentine's Day I went to with BRM in the Botanical Gardens in Melbourne. Summer evening, a slight breeze whispering through the silent crowd, and then the first notes from the 12-string that open this song... The words don't always make sense, but I know the whole thing by heart any way. ;)

"Wrap You Arms Around Me" - BAre Naked Ladies.
A new addition to the List, but a worthy one. Simple arrangement, and words that hit home the first time I heard them... and airports aren't the most romantic places.
*
"With Or Without You" U2.
A lot of my favourite romantic songs are conflicted ones - they're not the perfect love story songs, but the songs that speak of pain as well as happiness. A relfection of my experience, I guess, but to me, you don't get love without pain, not without deluding yourself. "With Or Without You" really sums up the whole deal for me.
*
"Talk About Love" My Friend The Chocolate Cake.
It's not a Rossi song list without a mention of these guys. ;) There's this excellent cello solo in the middle that's really good to hum. And the words, the feeling, they really speak to me.
*
"Ghost" Indigo Girls.
Okay, not a traditional love song (none of these have been, really), but I just love the flow of words in this one, the imagery... And I wish I could sing well enough to not torture anyone in earshot of the bathroom when I attempt it. ;) It's about the power love has to hold you, even after it's gone.

"You" Luka Bloom
This man has a voice that would make a stone weep - Irish, rich as dark chocolate Tim Tams. :) Very swoon worthy - his cover of "Throw Your Arms Around Me" by Hunters and Collecters is magical - but this song, which is very short, but very, very effective. Breaks your heart, just listening to it.
*
"Wherever You Are" Neil Finn.
A song of yearning again, of invitation. Mujst be something about Neils, that they seem to be creative geniuses.
*
"Midnight Rain" Paul Kelly
The strange thing about Paul Kelly, is that like Billy Bragg, his singing voice isn't really anything special. But they both have an amazing songwriting talent, and they write songs that suit their voices perfectly. "Midnight Rain" is another recent fave, just edging out "She's Rare" as gooey song pick.

That's it for now - there are stacks more, but I'm getting distracted. ;)
