And the merry-go-round spins again.
And it looks like I'm never getting off.
Missed out on that job I got interviewed for yesterday, which really, really bites. I'm so sick of putting in the effort of writing aplications and going to interviews and then being told I'm not fucking good enough. I'm sick of crappy pay and menial work and not being allowed to advance because I can't jump through the damn interview hoops. I know I'm good enough to be a manager, they know I'm good enough, so why the hell won't they give me a chance?
Some good - Peter (the boss at Sunshine) is going to meet with me next week to give me detailed feedback on my technique. So next time - and may it be sooner rather than later - I'll hopefully do better.
I knew if I got excited about this I wouldn't get it. Bloody kiss of death, actually hoping I get something.

I'm sorry. I knew you really wanted this one. I'm sorry it didn't work out for you.

Perhaps you should worry less about your technique for interviewing? Maybe it's an Aussie thing, but in the States most corporate employers(not jobs like Blockbuster, Mickey D's and the like) would prefer that you be yourself rather than some perfect little version of yourself. They like to see actual personality in order to guage how well we fit in with the current employees.
PLEASE take with a grain of salt. I don't know the standard interviewing practices in Aussieland - but, if I were an employer, I wouldn't want someone spending their time studying how to give the perfect interview. I'd want someone who was confident enough to demonstate that they knew it and altered it as they saw fit because they spent most of their time doing the job and had too much confidence in themselves and their skills to worry so much about presentation.

I do appreciate it, mate. The reason why I've been honing my technique is because I'm not confident with interviews. I don't come across as confident in my abilities. Hence the practicing.
The other part is the fact I'm working for the public service. The interview technique is different to ordinary corporations, because all the candidates have the qualifications and skills from working in the courts for about the same amount of time. Peter, when he called me, told me I'd done well in answering three of the key selection criteria during the interview, but not so well in the other two. You sit there and they ask you one question per criteria, and you're expected to get it right first time - there's no second chance. And the questions are frequently the same, as are the criteria - the whole thing is _structured_ to test not your ability, but your interview technique. It makes me so mad, but then again, who else is going to hire a 33 year old court clerk with no other experience and only basic typing skills? No-one, because I've already tried that. I can't even get interviews for those. It's public service or nothing, by the looks of it, at least until I can get the money together to do some more training. Only I don't have the money because I'm a level 2 public servant and I'm living on my own and I just don't have it.
*sighs* I'll be okay, just feeling sorry for myself. Gonna go to this Saints and Sinners party tonight and forget about work and interviews and the whole thing and then come Monday I'll go back, do my job, meet Peter for this feedback session, and try again.

Great Advice - Mitai

Re: Great Advice - Mitai
Second - the difficulty is this: I'm 33 years old, I've been a public servant for almost eight years, and I have been trying to break out for the same amount of time I've been trying for these various promotions, over the past nine months. All my experience is court-related, and the only thing I seem to be able to apply for is lower-paying, menial administrative positions, which I then don't get because I don't touch type.
It's not so much wanting to fit in, it's more finding something they'll let me do. And since all my experience seems to be in the courts, the courts seem to be where I'm going to be stuck. Especially since I don't have the money to do further training because my current wage doesn't allow it.
But I do appreciate the thought.
