Trials of a public servant...
Mar. 14th, 2001 06:56 pmI ended up doing an hour of overtime today. I wouldn't mind so much if I actually got *paid* for it, but when you work for the Victorian public service, you take what you get and make sure you don't ask for extra. Still, Pete will see me good with time off in lieu; that'll come in handy for Easter when I need to catch the train to Sydney. Yep, I'm going to spend my four days off with Seraph, and maybe see Amanda too. I'm damned if I'm going to sit at home all Easter holiday while BRM goes off on his bike trip. To be fair, he did invite me, but as an afterthought. Besides, I'm tired of having to rely on him to provide my social life. :P
Mr O'Day (the magistrate today) might look like your favourite great-uncle, but he's surprisingly harsh. He jailed two people today - the semi-hysterical woman from the bail application yesterday, and "Bonnie" from the car chase couple yesterday. "Bonnie" appealed; I was glad I was in court, since Pete had to deal with the paperwork. Still, I've got three Children's Court Clinic Reports to fax down to Melbourne tomorrow, so I didn't get away scot free.
We splurged and had fish and chips for dinner. Very bad for us, but what's the point of being ultra-healthy if you can't splurge occasionally? Although we were defeated by the sheer mass that is $2 minimum chips. ;) It's probably the first time we've gotten take away since we moved up here, and cost $10 between the pair of us. Actually, it wasn't bad for a local shop several hundred miles from the sea, a fact which I always found ironic at mum and dad's seafood Christmas dinner extravaganza. The seafood place does pretty well for itself up here in summer.
BRM's just given me a shoulder rub, which has left me feeling very amiable toward life in general. I'm such a massage slut - rub my shoulders and I'm yours, although after fighting the knots in my shoulders and neck, most people are too exhausted to take advantage of me in my puddled state. That's the cool thing about karate camp; lots of people willing and able to give me a decent massage. ;) I'm really looking forward to the weapons camp come the end of April. It's costing me $85 (not including train fare down, another $80), but it's worth it for seeing them and playing with the "toys". *grins evilly*
Lessee, what else? It's hard to think when I'm all relaxed and sleepy. ;) Oh, one good thing about that double-dammed civil contest (alias The Case That Would Not Die). It went on for so long this afternoon (three hours), that I managed to get the first half of chapter six of "Suffer the Children" roughly written out. There's a few gaps to be filled - the curse of writing at work, my train of thought keeps getting interrupted - but it's looking good. It was funny, writing another bloody death scene in the middle of an argument over legal fees. I kept wondering what Mr O'Day might think if he knew what I was feverishly scribbling down in his court. ;) I think I'm giong to have tostart taking the notebook to work again - I keep using up the supplies of scrap paper. ;)
