Isn't it funny, how one day can be absolutely appalling, the worst you've had for ages, and the next can be completely the opposite?

I'm feeling much better now, thank you very much. :) As if you couldn't tell by the liberal scattering of smileys. I know it's terribly nerdy of me to use them, but they're just so damn expressive. "A collection of punctuation speaks a thousand emotions", or something like that. *chuckles* You always know I'm in a good mood because I start babbling. A combination of a very easy half-day, another gorgeous sunny afternoon, and the knowledge that the rest of the day is mine, to do with what I will.

Actually, I'm being terribly productive. I did the grocery shopping for the next couple of weeks (hopefully, considering how much I spent!), lugging home about ten kilos of stuff in my straining panniers. Poor Cecil steered like a pregnant whale - all that weight on the back meant the front wheel wanted to raise off the ground, and touring bikes were never designed for wheelies. I did the dishes from last night and this morning, and from my lunch (Thai style 2 minute noodles, heavy on the chilli, yum! Best thing for scratchy throats, chilli), and started my laundry. I even went to the milk bar across the park for a paper and our monthly box of apple juice; it's made at a local orchard, and is excellently delicious, and if we buy it in bulk, it's only $3 per two litre flagon (cheaper by about 30 cents a bottle compared to most other fresh juices). Bulk means a case of six bottles, weighing about 12 kilograms in all - by the time I got home with it I was wishing for a bit of twinkish super-strength! I also called around the mattress places about the sofa bed, but no joy there. I'll drop into Clark Rubber tomorrow on my way to pick up my Dexcon tickets (yes, this is a definite this time, come Hell or high water!) and see if they can help me out. We need the mattress, even if we don't have visitors - David's couch sags a bit without it.

Hmm, all very domestic. Any moment now I'll be wearing frilly aprons and calling everyone 'sweetheart' and fretting about my mother-in-law. Shoot me now.

On the creative front... Almost finished the first chapter of my novel. Yeah, I know, I started that five months ago, but I've been stuck. But at least I actually put words to screen and got something down. I may scrub it later, but I'll see how it goes. I've also got another THOSD post in the works - that's the next thing, after this journal update. Slight change to the plans Raph adn I came up with last night, but I think I can still work it. But I will be including a definite "NO REMAKES OF PREVIOUS RRS!!" theme. It's for the same reason I loathe remakes of films or TV shows; it's been done, you missed the boat the first time around, get over it and do something else, something new. Maybe it's coming across all dino-ish (what, me? A dino? Ye gods!) but it's as Seraph said - it's not homage, it's disrespectful of the people who came up with the orginal ideas in the first place, telling them, "I can do it better than you did." Especially when the result isn't better. And I'm darned if the House is ready for another blood-and-guts fest.

There, got that off my chest. ;)

Next fic on the 'to be finished' list is the Fish origin story. I'm half-way there, just need to round it off. ;)

Now, for work yesterday. Why was it so bad? Well, apart from the fact we were hopelessly overbooked again - ten intervention order cases, a civil contest booked in for two hours, a criminal contest booked in for another hour, a handful of family law matters, including the Property Argument From Hell, two people in custody, and a few others who had been adjourned from other days - apart from that, when I was ready to start court at ten, no-one was bloody ready! Now, had it been a mention day, with lots of people rocking up and wanting the duty lawyer on the spot, I would have been more understanding. But these were all case that had been booked in from other days, some of them weeks ago. Plenty of time for lawyers to see their clients and get instructions.

Apparently not. *fumes* This is coming up at the next Court Users Forum, I can tell you. Bloody lawyers. I worked part way through lunch in an effort to get those who had been waiting all morning gone before the civil matter that afternoon, and court was still sitting when I left at four-thirty, half a hour past my normal time. An hour's overtime, which wouldn't be so bad if I actually got paid for it. Pete said this morning they didn't finish sitting until five o'clock. Still, I did manage a nice lunch with Paula and Rob (the police prosecutor) at Zilch's, the gormet sandwich place down the road. It's good, but pricey, so it's an occasional treat for me. And after the morning we'd had, we deserved it.

One of the cases was another revolting one, but I won't mention it here. Some things you don't want to know.

And good news on the magistrate front. We've got Barry Docking coming up next week. *beams* He's semi-retired, what we call a circuit magistrate, working when required, and he's the loveliest bloke. Efficient, too. :) He used to be a clerk himself, back in the old days when it was easier to move from clerk to magistrate (you didn't have to practice Law for ten years, the work experience meaning something!) and he was at Heidelberg when I started the job, back in October 1996. He loves puns and is something of a ratbag, so it'll be a good week next week. :) Something to look forward to.

And I've made some mid-year resolutions. Because I've been feeling somewhat flat and non-achieving. ;)

1) Limit myself to one whinge-journal post a month;

2) Learn a new HTML code every month, and learn it so I don't forget.

3) Sod the romance thing. If it happens, it happens, no point mooning around because I'm not getting any.

4) Train with the karate club at least twice a week, preferably three.

5) Write something new every day, even if it is just a few lines.

Number four isn't going to be easy this week - no training tonight, but next week is always a new start. ;)

And welcome to new additions to the "friends" list: Icewing, Alara and Ken. If you want off, just let me know.
