What the mailbox brings...
Jun. 25th, 2001 01:46 pmThe snail mail one out the fron, that is. I got home at about 12.15 after my half-day, feeling pretty good - I oiled my chain again this morning and Cecil is much happier. No more evil squeaking grinding noises - having made good time riding home. The mail box was bursting with junk mail (I really need to find a "No Crap" sign, dammit!) and after sorting it all out, I found two surprises. One good, one sucky.
The sucky one is the phone bill, but I was sorta expecting that anyway. What I wasn't expecting was how much it was - how the hell did we rack up $300 worth of calls? The overseas ones account for about $100, which will be on my share, but the rest seems to be mobiles and long-distance to Melbourne, mainly. *sighs* To be expected, I guess, with most of our friends down there, but ouch! I haven't had a phone bill that big since Elsternwick, and that was because we had two phone lines. BRM's going to freak, probably justifiably. I know I did.
The good surprise was another Lise Postcard! *beams* I forgot to mention the other one, with the world's most disgusting peanut butter sandwich on the front *grins* but they're great little pick-me-ups. Especially as her timing in excellent.
Also had a nice long chat to Seraph last night on the phone, one of those "anything and everything" calls. I mentioned how much I miss casual hugs, since my main source (the karate club folks and Yasmin) are all in Melbourne. There's something ineffably comforting about using someone as a pillow. Or being used as one yourself. Or getting a shoulder rub. So I warn Dexcon folks now - I'm going to be rather huggy this year. Gotta stock up. *winks*
I've been chewing through my pile of books at a scary rate - finished The Justice Game and my book club book, The Drowner and I'm nearly through the Kurt Vonnegut short stories - some excellent tales in there, like the one about the people who have learned to do without their bodies. Still, the one Mum lent me Vermilion Gate should keep me busy for a while - it's one of those multi-generational family epics. This one's set in China, starting just after the rise of Communism. It's a honking big book, too big for the bath, unfortunately.
Hrm, not much else to talk about. I almost went to see Shrek last night, only BRM ended up going to a birthday thing for one of his classmates instead. Phooey. :P Better luck next time. And if next weekend is a fizzer too, then sod it, I'll just go see it any way.
