That which doesn't kill me...
Feb. 28th, 2003 11:56 am...makes me extremely sore the next day. Owie.
Okay, enough whinging - the reason I'm sore is that I had the karate demo at the uni yesterday, which was pretty full-on, as we have to be all dynamic and exciting and interesting to get the punters in, and then I had training that afternoon. And I went Wednesday night as well, which was as intensive as last night's workout, so this extremely out-of-training deathpixie is feeling it today. You know that scene in Ghost in the Shell where Kusanagi's trying to rip the hatch off the tank and you have that shot of the muscles multiplying and growing across her back and shoulders and then her arms rip off? That's how my shoulders and back are feeling right now. Legs aren't too bad, but that's because I walked home and stretched them out, and rode the bike into work today.
Ah well, it'll work outself through. I've got training on Monday (they've switched days on me, which sucks, because Monday is my climbing day to be), so I'll go to that and work out any residual stiffness. And if the weather warms up, maybe wander down to the Brunswick Baths for a swim over the weekend. A few laps of the Olympic-sized pool could just be what the doctor ordered.
Pain aside, I'm feeling good to be back into the exercise thing after a week off. I was feeling dead tired earlier this week, to the point I was making mistakes at work, but today I'm all rejuvenated. Could be I had the day off yesterday too, but walking home last evening I realised how much I enjoy the stuff I do. I had a moment of pure joy riding in this morning - zooming round a corner, dodging a pedestrian, feeling the movement of the bike... I hadn't realised how much I missed that whilst I was Walkabouting. Next time I do something like that, there's going to be a bike involved.
There's a few next times in the works. Some might be no more than pipe dreams, others semi-concrete plans. It all depends on time and money, really. The main one is Europe - I've figured out if I stay with the Dept of Justice three more years, I get my long service leave (about ten weeks). It would also give me three years to get the money together - I'm going to need something close to ten grand, at least, and that's after paying for plane tickets. The other one is a road trip around Australia, for a non-specified amount of time. Just buy a car (probably a ute or a station-wagon, with space for stuff (like a bike) in the back), and take off around the country. It's pretty easy to get work, especially in the isolated areas, so I'd just travel until I needed money, work as long as required, and then continue on. That's a longer-term plan - I can do that any time, being an Aussie citizen. I also want to get back to the Rockies and hike my way from Banff to Jasper over a month or two - but that's one of those more nebulous things, and there's stuff I want to do first before going back to places I've been. Although there's a lot of the States I missed or had to blitz through on account of money and time issues - two months just wasn't long enough, and I definitely needed more money than I had. If I'd had time, and wasn't travelling with someone, I would have taken up some of those offers from people to work in hostels along the way - technically a no-no without a work visa (which I can't get on account of the age thing), but quite common. So yeah, at some point I'll have to re-trace some steps and cover the bits I missed or really want to see again.
Work progresses. I missed out on the Emergency Services job (they told me on Wednesday), mainly because I had no experience in the area, but that's okay. Still waiting to hear about the two Heidelberg jobs I interviewed for last week - they're supposed to let us know by the end of this week, and what do you know, it's Friday! Must be Friday, I'm in casual.
Hmm, should do some work - I have a pile of refused applications to process. Stay hoopy, froods.
