Summonsed!
Jul. 30th, 2003 03:08 pmOne of the things about working in the courts is that at any time I can be summonsed to give evidence in matters that I was involved in as a clerk. So far, I've been lucky and avoided this.
Today my luck ran out, in spectacular fashion.
Two years ago I was bench clerking in Wodonga for a not guilty hearing involving a speeding camera offence. The defendant has since been charged with perjury for matters arising from evidence given during that hearing. The case is to be heard in the County Court of Wodonga, starting next week, and I've just been served with a supeona requiring my presence there at a date and time to be determined - I'm hoping they let me know by this Friday.
I nearly had a heart attack when I first looked at it, because it has the date of the 1st of August for my appearance, which is this Friday coming up (today being Wednesday here). But after calling the prosecuting solicitor, I've been told they'll let me know when. My boss has kindly suggested I use the Enforcement Management car to get up there (I got $55 in conduct money, which only gets me half-way there on the train - the usual fare is $90), so I need notice to arrange that, and for someone to cover court for me if it's on Tuesday - again.
Bah.
Just as well I remember this one pretty well - I tend to have a good memory for the nuffies, and this guy well and truly qualifies.
