deathpixie: (while my guitar gently weeps)
The death toll is up to 166, with 720 homes destroyed. There are still fires burning in several areas, with lightning strikes causing new ones. The Beechworth fire is still going - I'm wondering if the people I used to babysit for are okay, since their apple orchard is in that area. Plus my great aunt and uncle and some cousins.

I'm obsessively refreshing the ABC news website. It's just so mind-boggling. I know these areas: I've lived in them, cycled through them, camped in them. Coroner's must be going nuts, I read on the website the morgue is full - I'm torn between being glad I'm not still there to deal with the place being filled with burn victims, and sorry I'm not there to help. The CFA - the volunteer Country Fire Authority - has been doing incredible work, fighting the blazes, donations have been pouring in for those who have been burned out, 6000 new doners donated blood in one day. It's just so incredible.

Really makes you think about your priorities.
