I'm posting this anonymously because it's a family secret, but trust me: I'm someone you know well. If I screw up and this does NOT come through anonymouos, please, read then delete.
What you describe could have happened to me. My mother and most of not all of her sisters were abused by their father, while their mother (my grandmother) either pretended to not know or blanked it out completely.
As a child I was upset that my parents would NEVER let me stay the night at my mother's folks' house while I was always allowed to stay over at my father's parents' house just down the street. When I was old enough to know why, though it obviously pained her, my mother told me the reason. And I've never been more grateful.
In other words: part of the blame IS on the daughter in this case (the grandson's mother). She KNEW what her family was like, yet she left her child in their care. Looks to me like there are no innocents in this case aside from the child. :(
