A similiar thing happened with my work computer - although it's a PC and I don't know how Macs do file systems. Your OS files may be borked, and that may be preventing the computer from booting properly, especially a Mac laptop. The seemingly easy answer would be to have another computer rip the files from your hard drive to a CD or backup storage device, bare-bones format your damaged hard drive, reinstall the OS, and then you have your files all backed up.

Of course, I don't know if this is possible with a Mac, much less a laptop. You know, you could always switch to the PC crowd...
