Gakked from [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com]. And yes, someone needs to collate the various permutations!
Timely, considering the email I got from Trisha Lynn about various slang terms I used in Collective Mutants. Explains a lot about Aussies.
Age: 33
Where did you grow up? North-eastern Victoria, Australia. Very rural.
What do you call...
1. a body of water, smaller than a river, contained within relatively narrow banks? A creek
2. the thing you push around the grocery store? A trolley
3. a metal container to carry a meal in? A lunchbox - but ours are plastic, not metal.
4. the thing that you cook bacon and eggs in? A frying pan or fry pan.
5. the piece of furniture that seats three people? A couch.
6. the device on the outside of the house that carries rain off? Gutters.
7. the covered area outside a house where people sit in the evening? Verandah.
8. carbonated, sweetened, non-alcoholic beverages? Generally soft drink, but I also call the clear Sprite-like stuff lemonade and lemon-flavoured fizzy drink is lemon squash.
9. a flat, round breakfast food served with syrup? Pancakes - although we have ours with honey rather than syrup.
10. a long sandwich designed to be a whole meal in itself? A sub, but only since the introduction of Subway to Australia. Before that they were salad rolls (only not that long), and if you ask for a sub outside of Subway you'll get funny looks.
11. the piece of clothing worn by men at the beach? Bathers, swimmers, cozzie, speedoes (if they're the tiny ones) or, if they're the long board shorts, boardies.
12. shoes worn for sports? Sneakers or sandshoes, depending on price. Sandshoes are the cheap canvas ones.
13. putting a room in order? Having a tidy.
14. a flying insect that glows in the dark? Nothing - we don't have them.
15. the little insect that curls up into a ball? Slater, but I'm guessing it's a different species to the ones in the Northern 'Sphere.
16. the children's playground equipment where one kid sits on one side and goes up while the other sits on the other side and goes down? See-saw
17. how do you eat your pizza? With my hands, point first.
18. the act of private citizens putting up signs and selling their used stuff? Having a garage sale.
19. the evening meal? Tea when I'm in the country, dinner in the city.
20. the thing under a house where the furnace and perhaps a rec room are? The cellar, although I've never lived somewhere with one. They're not common in Australian architechture.
