A comet crashes near a town in America. All the children that were in utero at the time (can't remember the exact number, 130, I think) all develop super powers. As a result they're raised separately, prevented from leaving town, taking certain jobs - they're like mutants, only there's a specific number of them and it's all to do with this one incident, which frightens people. The first book opens as a murder mystery - someone is killing Specials (as they're known) and the most powerful of their number tries to find out why.
