I've come to really loath America's immigration policy over the last few years. Afterall, I kinda have a reason for wanting to move to America and all. But to be perfectly honest, Australia's is almost exactly identical. I've kinda had the reason to check and for both you either need to have a relative in the country willing to sponser you, be married to someone in the country or have a job prospect willing to sponser you. The only thing I noticed that was different is that with Australia, you can get in if you're considered a De Facto partner of someone who is Australian. And this is for only applying for a green card/work visa. (I really love the logic that says you have to have a job in America/Australia before you can apply for a card that will give you permission to work in America/Australia.)
Canada on the other hand, is much better. There at least they allow you to apply for permanent residence based on a point system, where if you match or exceed the points needed you can at least apply for a permanent resident card.
