... How about a complete removal of the current installation, followed by a reinstall?

My next thought after that would be 'pooched registry database' -- but you probably don't have a registry maintenance tool. (For that matter - I don't really know how to use the one I've got other than following the default repair suggestions.)

Actually -- before all of that chasing around -- have you checked Adobe's support pages for Adobe Acrobat?
