Yes, it will be good for both you and him to be away from each other for a while. Other than your vacation in Canada, I don't think you've done it at all since the breakup. I've always applauded you for being able to live with him after that, and now that you're becoming more independant, he's got to realize that once the two of you truly go your separate ways, he will be alone.
