In my last year in Melbourne, I happened upon a "3 for $15" video sale and found The Dark Crystal, The Princess Bride and Labyrinth, all of which I remember adoring from my early teens. The first two held up to the years. Labyrinth... not so much.

I mean, David Bowie is still awesome in it (even if he does seem stoned in several scenes!) but the tights are just too much, and Jennifer What's-Her-Name is just awful in it and the effects just... no. Apparently you have to be a kid, or at least have access to whatever the production crew were smoking, to really get back into this one.

The Dark Crystal, on the other hand, still rocks.

David Bowie's hair was the star of Labyrinth. The contents of his tights? A distant, though prominent, second. Jennifer Conolly ranks somewhere after the muppets.

As for Princess Bride, I don't know. It may be one of my favourite movies, but the part where the Dread Pirate Roberts, known for never leaving a man alive, spares Prince Humperdink was pretty lame. To this day, I still have the nasty suspicion that the grandfather paused in his reading, skimmed over the next few pages, and then made up a happily-ever-after ending.

Also? `What the Dread Pirate Roberts came to realise was that when Wesley said, "As you wish", what he really meant was, "I love you."'

Have never actually got around to watching The Dark Crystal.

How do you feel about The Neverending Story?
