Not so much the hooker with the heart of gold, Amanda Sefton is a prostitute used by Gene as an informant (and sometimes more). Sam catches Gene out with the "something more" and insists that Gene turn handling of Amanda over to him. She's suspicious at first, dismissing his 'do-gooder' ways, but as time goes on she grows to trust him. She comes from a background of hidden abuse and neglect, culminating in her running away and winding up working the streets of London, but she gradually dares to hope, under Sam's influence, that there is a better life for her out there. Unfortunately, this doesn't sit well with her boyfriend/pimp, Manuel, who regularly abuses her. When Sam interrupts one such incident and throws Manuel out, he tries to convince Amanda to leave him. She won't - she's convinced that he loves her 'in his own way'. When she subsequently misses a meeting, Sam returns to her flat to find it a wreck and her beaten body lying on the floor. Sam enlists Gene to help him track down Manuel, using every dirty trick in the book, and only barely stops himself from killing the man, instead arresting him for murder despite Gene's admonishment that she was "only a tom".
