To be honest, a lot of them I've come across through my literature classes in high school and university - it's really a list of typical fare from humanities classes in England and the Commonwealth, with some more modern popular works (like Harry Potter) thrown in for street cred. Not to say it's not a good list - I'd recommend about half of what's on there, and I certainly want to read a few of the ones I've missed, like The Lovely Bones.
