The Idea is that Dukkha arises. Dukkha is inevitable, but suffering (I can't remember the Hindu word at the moment) is created by us wishing that it would not arise. There is, in Buddhist thought, a clear distinction between bad stuff and suffering... Bad stuff is inevitable and suffering is preventable. The goal of the Buddhist is to see the truth as it is and not as we wish it and then to live in such a way that we can remove suffering from our lives. The thing is we as non buddha (Buddha means Awakened) experience suffering because we bring it on ourselves but trying to fight that suffering would only make it worse. As part of the concept of looking deeply we must first look deeply at our own suffering to understand it so that we may see how we cause it. I would explain in more detail but that would basically require me to give an overview of the entire Buddhist religion. I have a couple books that explain just that... let me see if I can dig one up for you.
