Back from Canberra, safe and sound, with a slightly rough voice from talking too much, a tan from cycling around the lake on the White Queen (oh my god that's a beautiful bike!) and a sense of relaxation and well-being that comes from a weekend hanging out with my tribe. As an added bonus, today is Eva's first day back at work, so we can has Zoe for the whole day. She's so cute. :)
Canberra ho!
Apr. 16th, 2009 02:17 pmOff to Canberra in a couple of hours. I'm meeting up with [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com], [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com], [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com] and [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com] for a weekend of frolicing and fun. Catch you all on the flip side. :)
Edit: and maybe I'll be able to get online with the laptop long enough to get [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com]'s beta back to her, and fling a plot at folks for Yvette. ;)

It's the little things...
Mar. 20th, 2009 11:18 amA roomie who plans out a menu to make sure there's enough money to go 'round and cover various things. A lawyer who thanks you with a bouquet of spring flowers. A crisp, bright morning. The knowledge that my next cup of coffee will be free, thanks to my frequent flyers card. A drive-by online nuzzle from the pretty girl upstairs. Good news via an email from my Dad.
When things are piling up on a person and they feel alone and miserable, it's not the big dramatic gestures they need. It's the little things, the small, thoughtful reminders that they do indeed matter to someone, that their pain is acknowledged and felt. An email. Consideration for their state of mind and some leeway. A hug. A 'thank you' for what they've done. The little things that are easy to forget in the scale of things, but which are the glue which hold relationships of all kinds together.

Back to business
Feb. 25th, 2009 11:54 amBack to the gym tonight, back to the regular working week, back to trying to remember to take my B12 since I've been insanely tired the past few days. Ah routine, how you are like a snuggly beige-coloured blanket. Comforting in your boredom.
Still, it's been a great couple of weekends, full of visits from all sorts of folks. Love my peeps.

Dead of sushi
Jan. 2nd, 2009 07:52 pmIt is possible to eat too much sushi, even for me. Ow. Oh Baldwin Street All You Can Eat sushi place, how I love you and how much you hurt me...
Also, I can has tea. Lots of tea, as [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com] and [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com]'s box came today. :) [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com] there are books on loan for you in there too. :) Thanks, guys, I was just out of my nifty tea flowers. :)

Still alive
Dec. 27th, 2008 02:37 pmChristmas was fun, although on top of various gifts of largely the readable sort (I love my friends who understand the book thing!) Santa also brought me a dose of the flu. Meh. Throat's scratchy and irritated, nose is sniffly and body is achy. Meh again.
Today is for lying on the couch with a blanket, drinking tea and eating chili that the roomie made the other week, and waiting for my brain to engage.
Which is pretty much how the day after Christmas/Boxing Day should be spent. ;)

Happy Holidays!
Dec. 25th, 2008 04:36 pmA quick post, since there is food coming and my butt is freezing. Happy holidays of whatever kind (even if it's Happy Two Days Off Work) to everyone, my thoughts to those who are working ([Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com] in particular) and may this year be everything you want it to be.
I'm currently in London, having gotten a lift up with Greg yesterday to the roomie's mother's place. Fabulous food was had, way too much red wine was consumed and today we wound up at Lee's place. He's currently at his family gathering, we tried to see a movie but nothing was open downtown and now we're awaiting Chinese take out. And then back to Toronto tonight. Mum and Dad, I'll try and call you then.
BTW, if XP people haven't figured it out yet, no modlist from me today. ;)

Announcement
Dec. 19th, 2008 09:35 am[Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com] is Awesome. For many reasons, but especially for the fantastic group gift that arrived yesterday.
Also, I seriously walked to work in the snow today. We're currently be-blizzarded. Long live giant scarves knitted by mothers which you can wrap around your head to avoiding breathing in snow.

Good start to the day...
Dec. 2nd, 2008 09:56 amWell, I found out last night, but re-reading the thread re [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com]'s triple birth still leaves a huge smile on my face. I'm so happy for Duey, Lee and their three little ones.
Good news and happiness on LJ is always the best way to start the day.
Requested my leave to go back to Australia for a visit in April yesterday, booked my tickets last week. I'm looking forward to seeing everyone again, and to meeting my neice when she's born - a month to go, whee!

Halloween, part 2
Nov. 1st, 2008 02:50 pmParty last night at the Dark Horse, a pub down the road a bit from here. Johnny had a gig (solo, with acoustic) and there was a costume party, so we all rocked up in full comic geekery. [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com] was Tony Stark, complete with glowing chest piece created by the extremely clever [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com], Aisy herself was Steampunk Batgirl, and I tuned into my inner Goth with Gaiman's Death. (and yes, there are photos). Everyone looked great - Johnny was Alex from A Clockwork Orange (and suitably creepy), Mindy was dressed as Alice in Wonderland with chains wrapped around her (no prize for the pun!), Hope and Bernard were hippies, Greg was a Dick Dastardly type with a twirly moustache and top hat (which I stole for a chunk of the night!) and Heather was a vampire/goth in a really nifty spiderweb cape and red dress.
Lots of fun had by all, until about one-ish when the partygoers left and the usual "dregs of Bloor West" inhabited the bar. Johnny wasn't done, but Dex, Aisy and I headed to the Griffin as we'd promised Melena we'd drop by and show her our costumes (and appreciate hers - Egyptian princess of the Elizabeth Taylor type, yum!) and have a quiet drink to round things off. Then pizza, showers to wash out the temporary black hair dye Dex and I both had on, and Iron Man, although none of us made it through the whole thing. Pepperoni is on the 'safe' list of meat, btw, I still have black nail polish on and it looks weird, and I got up at 2.
So yeah, a good night was had. Tonight's [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com]'s birthday party, so yeah, big social weekend for us, but the days are nicely lazy.
Although I need to clean the kitty litter and take out the garbage. :P

Oh what a night.
Oct. 12th, 2008 02:12 amMindy's birthday party tonight, with a reunion of Johnny's band, "Urban Legend" as the gift. Amazing night, great music, fun atmosphere and the appearance of several old faces I haven't seen for a while. Voice is wrecked (stupid cold), ears are ringing slightly and I'm for bed very soon, but well worth it all.
Tomorrow we're having Thanksgiving dinner (it's actually on Monday, but we're doing the dinner while we still have people up) so I'll be offline again for another day and then I have Monday to sleep. Yay.

House of Plague, part 2
Oct. 7th, 2008 03:16 pmSo, I was right in my guess about getting sick, although I hadn't anticipated on the form it would take. I've had a crazy fever for the past two days and haven't been up for much beyond lying on the couch or in bed, alternatively kicking blankets off or pulling them on with my teeth chattering. It's really getting old, fast.
Awoke to bad news for a dear friend. It seems to be that kind of month. Thinking of you.

Up and down week
Sep. 28th, 2008 12:05 amOn Thursday, the roomie's grandmother died. She was in her nineties and has been ill for some time and it wasn't unexpected. She was ready to go and died peacefully. She was a sweet lady, who always made me feel welcome at the family events I met her at.
I won't be able to make the funeral because it's on Monday and I have the meeting to sign my contract that day and absolutely can't miss work, so I'm going to the viewing tomorrow to share my condolescences.

Dexcon: And so it begins
Jul. 30th, 2008 12:56 pmYep, it's that time again. And given that work's cutting down on the 'Net time, I'm going to be particularly absent over the next few days, as our apartment fills with people and I spend my weekend being social. Parentals, I got your call but I'll have to return it weekend after next - things are going to be a bit crazy. ;)
At least I got the cleaning done - thanks to the loan of [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com]'s vacuum cleaner, the couch is actually back to dark green with the removal of another cat's worth of hair. *wry* Said moggies are also ready, as I trimmed their claws last night, much to their displeasure. Angel got his revenge this morning by throwing up in the hallway, just as I was heading out the door to go to work, the brat.
Ah, Dexcon. The time that reminds me just how much I love you crazy people out there. :) Which is especially needed some times more than others. *wry*
Now if I can only sort out what the hell I'm wearing to the formal. I kinda forgot to do that part...
Edit: And as is traditional, I ran out of minutes on my phone a day or two before I needed it. *wry* Fixed now.

Kindness of strange friends
Jul. 10th, 2008 11:40 amYesterday I got a text message from Johnny, asking if I wanted to go out for sushi with him and Mindy. It's been about a month since I've really seen them since I've been hermitting a bit again, so it was great to get the invite. Especially 'cause it was specifically me, you know?
It's the little things. Like your roomie letting you have the last Drumstick 'cause you've got a wrenched neck and are feeling miserable. ;)

Houston residents - plea for platelets.
Jun. 28th, 2008 12:47 pmThis is reposted from my mate [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com]'s LJ here. Considering the recent talk about blood donations etc, I'm hoping there's someone on my friendslist who is in the region who can help out.
This is an email I got from Lisa, the wife-

Hello,
I'm sending out this email because we need your help. They have told us that there is a shortage of platelets out here at M D Anderson in Houston. Bill is needing these platelets very bad, he is profusely throwing up blood now and since there is a shortage, they are rationing the platelets to surgery patients first, then what they have left goes to the other patients, if the have them. If any of you know ANYONE that LIVES in the Houston area, please see if they would be willing to come to M D Anderson Cancer Center at 1515 Holcombe Blvd, Houston, Texas and donate PLATELETS in Bill's name. They would have to donate in John William Hammock's name; give his name and his ID number 551499, that way, he would be sure to get the platelets.
Thanks for your help.
Love, Lisa and Bill
This is not a hoax of any kind, this is on the level. If you're a resident of Houston, Texas and can donate, please do?
Edit: Correction supplied by Duey:
"Yesterday, I sent you out MDA's blood bank number to give to anyone living in this area who would like to donate...well, I gave you a wrong number! I didn't have the paper with me and I thought I knew it by heart...shows you how much I know! Here it is: 713-792-7777. Or you can go online to www.mdanderson.org/bloodbank that site will give you all the information."
Again, if you're in the Houston area, sign up and donate platelets!

Best. Roomie. Ever.
Jun. 12th, 2008 10:47 amLast night I came home to dinner and a white cranberry Cosmopolitan. Dinner (for me) was a swordfish steak and twice-baked potato with Ceaser salad that had been made with the fake bacon bits. Bliss. Then we went for a walk and wound up at the Griffin, where we talked over many things and he didn't mind even when I got a little sniffly over something.
I truly have the best roomie ever. And I have twice-baked potatoes for lunch, since he even boxed up the leftovers for me. *hearts*
