Gotta love public holidays - I may live like a student, but I don't get the holidays of one, so every time I have a day off, it's a thrill. Mainly because I get to sleep in. A lot.
I'm a morning person by training, not by choice.
It's another wet and kind of dreary day, but that's okay, because a) we need the rain, and b) I'm feeling particularly lazy and it justifies me staying inside, chatting to folks online and drawing on Mel's map that I got her. :)
Another typical week at work. No chairs being flung, but the usual cranky people and abusive phone calls. and long periods of waiting for people. The magistrate had a go at me over the listing of a contest for only half a day instead of a full day, which was unfair since Peter does the listing of contests, not me. But that's par for the course - my job isn't the sort of thing that gives you warm fuzzies at the end of the week.
I went over to Albury on Saturday. BRM had dropped by in the morning to pick up stuff, and mentioned he was on his way there, so I cadged a lift - I didn't especially feel like riding after the fainting fit the Friday night. :P I'm glad I did, because while it not only gave me the chance to get Mel's map, but I also got a new book. Considering I haven't actually bought a book since... *thinks* Aussiecon, and I've found out I can't go to Sydney after all due to time off constraints, I deserved it. And it's a great book, too. :)
See, BRM knew I was going to the bookshop, and asked me to look for Noam Chomsky's new one, September 11. I couldn't find it, more's the pity, because I'd be interested in having that one myself, but I found John Pilger's latest, The New Rulers of the World. I'm only part-way through the first chapter, but it's great stuff. Deals with a few topics - gobalisation and the price of the world economy, the Sydney Olympics and the continuing mistreatment of the Aboriginal population, and September 11 and the war on terrorism.
This is the kind of book that makes me think, as well as making me feel. Which is good, because my brain is turning into cottage cheese up here, where the only intelligent conversation I get is with BRM and phone calls. More on the thoughts in another post - want to read a bit more before I say much else. :)
My other self-indulgence this week was buying a copy of High Fidelity on video, which I watched last night. *grins* Great film, and for once I was able to watch a love story without getting all sniffly, mainly because it's so realistic it didn't trigger my soft-and-fluffy romance centres. Yes, I have them. And John Cusak being a complete and utter stupid selfish bastard on occasion didn't trigger them. Which is good.; it's hard to watch a film when you're sniffling. ;)
Aside - did that Top Five community get made?
Mum and Dad were supposed to be here for dinner on Saturday, but Mum has the flu pretty bad - I'll drop round later today and see how she is. She did send Dad round yesterday with some of the lemon meringe (sp?) pie she'd made for dessert, since I don't actually do dessert beyond ice-cream and fruit. ;) So, good movie, caramel tea (mental note, take some round to mum for her flu) and yummy pie with cream made for a good evening.
And I was productive yesterday too, finishing a beta and doing my laundry. And reading a very large document from Doqz, which had me laughing, lots. It's good to laugh.
Still restraining the urge to fling possessions into boxes. Only that would make the place a lot barer than it is already.
