Wide Open Road...
Aug. 17th, 2002 12:48 pmShortly (as in "when Hilly finishes her shower and I've brushed my teeth and we've packed the car...") we'll be heading down to Kingsport, Tennesee, to stay with the esteemed Dr Harper. :) It's a long-ish trip, but we should do okay. Just need to remember how to drive a manual. It's been a while.
Yesterday we 'did' Washington with Doc Benway (who has more books and comics than any one person I've met outside of a comic shop, and who kindly hosted dinner for a bunch of us), Matt, Frito and IJ. With a very brief Twillering. I fulfilled my wish to see the Vietnam Memorial (which is as stark and powerful as I've been told) and we also ended up in the Smithsonian and the Museum of American History. Much walking in the noonday sun. All of which was cool. :) The parts of Washington we saw were very much built for prosperity - it's all on a monument-al scale.
I have a small mystery for Dad - the American History Museum had a display of items left at the Wall, and one of these included a Victorian Cross, left with an Aussie flag and a display case detailing just how few Aussie VCs there are. As far as I can tell, only four of these were awarded to Vietnam vets, two posthumously, so this begs the question, "Who left it there, and why?" Something for your researches, Dad.
I also narrowly avoided chewing out an annoying man behind me who, upon his child seeing an Aussie Army slouch hat, explained that yes, there were a few Aussies who had been over there. Prat.
Exploration of the local public transport system was also undertaken - to this date, I've caught subways in London, Toronto, New York, Washington, and Baltimore. Go public transport. The train trip back from Washongton to Baltimore was fun - we made a conductor highly envious by being in the process of giving back rubs to each other when he went past. And I'm going to have to staple my water bottle to myself - i forgot to take it to Washington and we both got a tad dehydrated.
Hilly's turned off the shower, so I should end this and get my rear into gear. Catch you all later.
