In brief...
Aug. 30th, 2001 03:50 pmI'll write a longer post later, but for now I'll just give you the quick news...
1) I didn't get the secondment to Mildura, but it's no great loss. Things have improved here atmosphere-wise, and while the money would have been useful, I can manage without.
2) I told my boss about my Plan to return to Melbourne, and while he was disappointed (they won't get another person as knowledgeable as I am up here next year), he understood why.
3) I've been checking out writing/journalism courses, and found a few at the Council of Adult Education in Melbourne. Not too pricey either; something to keep me occupied down there.
4) BRM is heading over to the States on September 26th for a school thing, which means I'll have the place to myself for two weeks. *grins* Party, anyone?
5) Hell of a furore over the Afghan illegal immigrants that were rescued by a Norweigan ship and then refused entry into Australian waters by our government. Thankfully, the Senate blocked the passing of retroactive legislation that would have made the boarding of the ship by our armed forces legal, and now the government is facing pressure to let them land. More on that later, I think, once I've seen tonight's news. But time's running out for The Gnome - he must call an election by the end of September, and while he's been waiting for the government to be looking good before he does, that ain't gonna happen.
6) Our new full-time magistrate, John Hardy starts next week. He's a good bloke, although slow - he's still new to the job, so we'll have him trained soon enough. *grins*
7) Had a long talk with Mitai in chat, about various things. *grins* She gave me some more stuff to think about, and a whole heap of warm fuzzies.
8) Joined another LJ community last night, the australianmusic group. Still small, but should grow. Oh, and Shirley Strachan, who was part of the early Aussie glam rock scene, died yesterday, aged 49, in a helicopter crash. Scary, when I think I used to watch his TV show when I was a little kid.
9) Plans for tomorrow include getting a haircut and going over to Albury to get Dad a Father's Day prezzie and see if Midnight Nation #9 (August issue) is at the shop. Possibly even the Rising Stars second trade, should that have been published, although I doubt that it has. Ooh, adn I must get Hly a birthday prezzie, although she'll get it late 'cause I didn't know it was her birthday this Sunday until today.
