Too much Delta...

I'm watching the ARIAs (Australian Recording Industry Awards) tonight (mainly because Something for Kate is nominated) and it's barely been on ten minutes and I want to strangle Delta WhatsHerFace... Goodrem. The Neighbours chick who has gone the way of many of her fellow soapie stars and recorded an album in an effort to seem like less of a brainless bimbo and project some "depth". Ordinarily such a person wouldn't really register in the scale of Decent Music, or even the ARIAs, but Delta had the misfortune to come down with cancer recently, and so she's scored herself a record ten nominations in this year's awards.
(And she's just bloody well won her first one.)
Now, far be it from me to wish misfortune on someone striken with a potentially fatal disease, but I've had about as much as I can take from this talentless clotheshanger. Bad enough she's dominated the print and tv media, but now she's going to scoop the music awards pool, not because she actually is a good singer and deserves to, but because everyone feels sorry for the stupid bint.
(And she's just won another one - that's it, I'm looking for something else to watch)
Call me heartless and unfeeling, but just because you might die is no reason why you should win a whole bunch of awards despite your abyssmal lack of ability.
And on that note, next year's CBFFAs? I'm declaring myself terminally ill with the human variety of Mad Cow's Disease, the one that's impossible to spell.

Date: 2003-10-21 03:32 pm (UTC)Okay, maybe I was harsh with the talentless if she does write her own songs - is that just the words, btw, or the music as well? Cause the words are pretty basic - but then again, I am a Triple J listener. Delta's pure commercial and as out there as warm Weetbix for breakfast.

Misinformed much?
Date: 2003-10-21 10:30 pm (UTC)Let me just start by saying that I am NOT a Delta Goodrem fan (well, not true, I like one of the songs she has released a fair bit, but not the rest). So I'm not defending her out of bias.
Deathpixie, you are rather misinformed. Here are a few facts which you will hopefully give some thought to:
1. Delta Goodrem was actually signed by Sony Music two years (?) before she started on Neighbours. The producers of Neighbours actually put the word out to Sony and some other record company asking for a young lass that could sing. Sony sent them Delta, who had apparently had no aspirations re: acting before then.
2. She actually has a lot of input into her songs. She has written a fair few herself, both the lyrics AND the music.
3. I don't think her having Hodgkin's Disease (sp?) affected her award winning as much as you suggest. She was pretty well-touted (I just made that word up, I believe) even before she fell ill.
There. I've had my rant. Don't be mad at me. :)
Re: Misinformed much?
Date: 2003-10-22 12:02 am (UTC)Thanks for the info - doesn't change my essential opinion, but it helps to be informed. Although you could probably forgive my ignorance, considering she looks and sounds like every other soap star-turned-singer we've been getting. ;)
Possibly my whole objection to her is due to my avoidance of commercial radio, like the vertiable plague. Looks like it's me and my faithful Triple J, if the ARIAs are an indication of what's "popular" in Australia at the moment...
