Shop around, even if you have to go fairly far afield. There's got to be cheaper places then this. Also, is your laptop still under warrenty? That could make it cheaper.
*nods* Shop around. I know that there are less people out there who fix macs than things with Windows on, but still. The people who wanted to charge that much? Probably want to make sure that they can afford plate their screwdrivers in solid gold.
The place was the actual Apple dealer - most places wn't even look at a Mac. It's the price I pay, I guess - Macs are far more stable and less likely to do spectacularly scary shit, but when they do, it costs you.
I'll run a search via the Yellow Pages and see if there's anyone else who will look at it cheaper, although I was so shell-shocked yesterday I handed the computer over with a "well, I need it fixed" kind of attitude. I'm not exactly great with the sensible decisions when I'm stressed.
I'll see if there's anywhere else that does Macs - the place I took it to was the Apple Shop. Although I don't really have the time or resources to go traipsing all over the city - Auscon, remember? Karate camp weekend after that. Franticaly busy all bloody month.
Basically I'll see how long it's going to take them - if it's too long, I'll just accept the loss of everything and install OSX myself.
