So, today was the annual tree-planting the Department of Justice puts on as a gesture that yes, we are thinking about the enviroment, despite the fact a paper-free office is but a far distant pipe dream... Four of us from PERIN went, shipped down by bus to somewhere near Yarra Bend, I think - not that far from Richmond on the Yarra, any way. We planted apparently 4,000 native trees and grasses and did a fair bit of weeding as well - removing the non-native weeds to let the indigenous ones have a chance. Lots of good karma for me, and I got to thwack theraputically violently at the earth with a mini-mattock.
Lunch was provided, and you know you're being spoiled when the BBQ lunch includes pumpkin and asparagas frittata for the vegetarians and everything's on real plates with real cutlery - none of the evil plastic and paper, oh no! The real fun, however, started when we tried to leave.
The bus got stuck. There was this steepish grade hill, and the bus managed to get wedged to such an extent it lost traction in the back wheels. So we ended up sitting there for an hour and a half before a rescue bus arrived, and so by the time we got back to the city, it really wasn't worth going to work, or so we had confirmed by the boss. Which is why if you emailed my work account today, you won't get a reply until tomorrow when I'm actually there to check the account.
So, no indoor work for me today, yay! Lots of outdoors-ness and fresh air, yay! Dirt under my nails and a feeling of well-being that only comes with putting something back into the community, yay!
I think I may have gotten a tad too much fresh air. ;)
Oh, and what the hell is with Melbourne's weather today? Sunshine one minute, gale force winds and driving rain the next. I think the teenaged mutant who controls Melbourne's weather had some sort of psychotic break...
