Things you wish they'd told you earlier.
Jun. 29th, 2001 01:38 pmBack from the optometrist, complete with a trial set of disposable contacts in. I'm going to see how long they last with me using the computer; one of my biggest hassles with contacts is the combined drying effects of the screen/my concentration/not blinking enough. I have to go back next week, to see how these are going after sleeping in them, and to get the pupil dilation test.
Which brings me to the topic of today's post.
I'm myopic. Extremely so. It's caused my elongation of my eyes, which I knew. What I did not know, however, is that this type of myopia carries an increased risk of retinal tear due to the stretching of the eye, and that you should have the pupil dilation test every 18 months to keep an eye on it - pun not intended.
It's been about six or seven years since my last check. And I've been having some problems with my eyes, mainly flashes of light obscuring my vision, which is one of the symptoms of retinal tear. Now if I'd known about this, you bet your arse I would have gone for a check up sooner. The scary thing is tearing can result in separation of the retina from the eye, which causes permanent blindness. And the treatment for the tearing is pretty freaky - laser surgery.
So I'm a bit worried now. The optometrist assured me that I'm not likely to have it, but still, my eyes have been a bit weird lately. And because my eyesight is so bad, the thought of blindness has always terrified me.
*shoves the thought away* Listen to what the doctor said. Everything will be fine.
Bought myself a treat, after that unsettling news: the Moulin Rouge soundtrack. And I love it. Makes me want to see the movie again, because it's just that good. Also prompted a bit of a dancing session in the kitchen, 'cause the tile floor is the best for dancing on and there's lots of room. I love dancing, even if I'm probably not exactly talented. More... enthusiastic. ;)
