deathpixie: (grease in the wheels of justice)

For those who haven't heard/read me talking about the Gnish case, it's the couple who run fake credit agencies across Ontario, and who were recently jailed for 18 months on one of their 20-odd matters. They've applied for appeal bail, and that hearing's been bouncing back and forth for a while now, mainly because they haven't been able to get their respective acts together and obtain Judge's Orders to transport them from jail to court. At the last hearing on Monday, the Judge ordered that the Crown (that's us) obtain the order for Ms. Gnish, since they've been unable to secure her attendance at court yet. Apparently he was rather snarky about it.

So, I come in Tuesday to find I need to get a JO issued for January 29. Problem is, the jail demands two week's notice, and at that point we were down one day. However, I wrote up the order, made my affidavit and ran it into Old City Hall last night, on the way home.

I went to pick it up today, only to find that they weren't able to issue it. Why? Because the appeal is in the Superior Court, and the JP didn't feel he had the authority to issue orders for a higher court. So, after getting directions, I made my way through the slushy snow to the Superior Court. Having had to circle practically the entire building to find the front door, I was re-directed to three separate offices before finding where I was supposed to be.

Only to find that they wouldn't issue it either, since it's for Barrie and not Toronto Superior Court. *headdesks*

Right now one of the investigators is on her way here, where I'll meet her outside the building and give her the folder with my affidavit and the order in it. From there she'll drive to Barrie Superior Court, hopefully get the order signed, and then bring it back for me to fax. I'll have to courier it to Vanier Centre for Women to make sure they get it asap, but we're looking at probably another day's delay at this rate and I'm reasonably sure all this work is going to go for nothing since the jail won't be able to arrange transport in time. In which case the matter will be put over again, the Judge will demand another order, and the whole thing will start all over again.

*sighs*

And that's been just part of my day. How's yours?

- Back at work after a day of sick leave (and the monday before that I was at work not feeling well ...)

- Because I was gone for a day, I've got the usual insane backlog

- Last night the Networking/Network Admin under Linux class I was trying to get into did *not* get canceled due to low enrollment. (*applause*)

- Said class will probably be a bit insane -- it's an instructor I've had before, but he was given the class at the absolute last minute. The first two weeks will probably be very much invented-on-the-fly

- And in order to get past the parts of the class that are just review for me, I had to sign up for an additional 4 units (2 x 2-units) for the second half of the semester

- When I paid my fees I finally calculated that I've got 13 units on my schedule for this season. Only 3 of these are music-performance related classes that could be dumped to free up my schedule.

- This is in addition to working full time.

- The above-mentioned fee payment pretty much killed my xmas bonus.

... so ... pretty much standard operating procedure ...
