So I went over to Wodonga Plaza (the local shopping centre) during my lunch hour to have a poke around for various things, and got sucked into the CD shop again. Came out $80 poorer, but richer by three CDs.

Yes, three. This is because the GST is evil.

Any way, one is a Lightning Seeds "best of" with "Life of Riley" on it (which makes it worth it all by itself - I'll see if I can rip this one and send it to Staffie, since the other copy didn't work). The second was the new Luka BLoom album, 'cause the man is sex on a stick. And lastly, a sort of novelty item, Andrew Denton's Musical Challenge (volume 2).

Now, Andrew Denton is a comedian/journalist/DJ who currently has a radio show in Sydney which I've never heard since I don't live there. However, back when he had a late-night chat program, he had a smiliar thing going. The idea is bascially to challenge various musician guests to play songs they would normally not touch with a barge pole. I got this one because it had a few people I really like, such as Neil Finn, Barenaked Ladies and Something for Kate.

It's a very weird experience.

Some of the songs are better done than the originals - Barenaked Ladies do a very funky version of Prince's "When Doves Cry" (Lise, you have to hear this!), Neil Finn is swoonworthy with "Sexual Healing", and a country singer by the name of Josh Joplin (who I've never heard before) does a pretty good version of "Eye Of The Tiger" from Rocky V. And Willie Nelson doing Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" is just too damn short. ;)

Some are just hysterically funny - The Cruel Sea lose all their cool cred with their version of "Loving You" (and piked on the high notes), "Walk On The Wild Side" gets the Wiggles treatment (the Wiggles are one of those groups that aim their stuff at small children and wear brightly coloured skivvies), and "Morning Train (9 to 5)" will never be the same again after hearing the Angels do it.

There's 29 songs in all, and while there's a couple of duds (The Superjesus doing "You Can't Stop The Music" is just bad), it's w worthwhile purchase. If only for the laughter it prompted. ;)

I...I...the Wiggles doing "Walk on the Wild Side???"

:: head explodes ::

I must recommend to you the works of Big Daddy, and their 50s doo-wop covers of songs such as "Like a Virgin" and "Welcome to the Jungle."

Bring it to AusCon!!
