Yes, 'tis the season of work piss-ups and 'meetings' that involve BBQs and white wine by the bottle. Alas, poor liver, I knew you well, kinda.

So, the following is written Under The Influence. I am Drunk in Charge of an Internet Connection. Good opportunity to typo to my fingers' content. ;)

First up, a request that probably isn't needed since no-one has done so yet, but a polite request to keep LotR raves to generalities? At least until after Boxing Day, December 26th, which is when we poor Aussies will finally get a crack at it. It's bad enough having people command me to go see it without people going on and on about details I won't get near for another week at least. And that's if I can beg off the fmaily outing to the Wodonga Races on Boxing Day. Not to rain on anyone's parade, but yes, I am going to see it, and no, I don't particularly want to know what is or isn't in the film from the books. I'd call for no spoilers, but that's kinda silly considering I've read the book so often I've got it practically memorised and my copy is extremely dog-eared, and seem to be the only person who got the LotR Unicorn edition reference in "Shrek". So, just a polite request for an end to my torment?

The newbie writing my life just got more creative.

Remember yesterday's post? The bit about hampers? Well today, Greg Duncan, The Lawyer With Most Of The List and Defendant's Friend turned up at work today with not one, not two, but three Christmas hampers. One for each of us. A laundry basket, three feet long, two feet wide, two feet deep, full to the brim with bikkies and potato chips and wine and sun dried tomatoes and all sorts of goodies. For each of us.

This is just... I can't describe just what this is. Amazing doesn't cut it, since now I will be able to get through the next few weeks without overmuch shopping and without having to get my grandparents a gift, since there's a tin of Danish shortbread going begging. I figured I could add a 'voucher' entitling them to one meal cooked by their eldest grandchild, to be redeemed at any time over the next six months, one day of free labour from said grandchild (seeing how I owe them a painting job) and inlimited chauffer services. That should do nicely, seeing how I'm broke and have no idea what to get them any way.

Pete was kinda funny about accepting them, but like I said, what else can we do? Tell him, "Thanks but no thanks" after all the effort he's gone to? I'm taking it as a peace offering after all the extra work he's been giving us, with bail applications and not guilty pleas and the like. And it's not like he's going to get special treatment out of it - not any more than he already gets, anyway. And apparently one of the other solicitors dropped off a bottle of wine for each of us today, which I'll pick up tomorrow. So it's not like it's that unusual, showering the court staff with gifts.

*grins* It's nice to feel appreciated by someone, seeing how the Department of Justice couldn't give a flying fuck.

Registrars' 'meeting' today at Wangaratta Court, about an hour's drive down the highway from here. Pete gave me a lift, which was good, since it meant I could drink and not worry about getting home. See, that's the thing about working for the public service and the festive season. Things get very "festive". Not as festive as they will be at the police Christmas Party tonight - Paula's going, which is why she stayed on at work this afternoon, but I decided to take a rain check after my prior experience of police parties. Cops party hard, and get extremely hands-on while they're at it. And being groped by a drunk Senior Constable who has a wife and three kids is not my idea of fun.

So, this afternoon was kinda fun. I got the chance to meet people I've only spoken to on the phone, and to catch up with several Melbourne Magistrates' alumni who escaped for the freedom of country courts. And they had veggie burgers for me at the BBQ. :)

Another work party tomorrow, the unoffical one. Just the court staff, as far as I know, and a picnic in the park down by the man-made lake, which is a very pretty spot. I'm not actually working, but since I'm planning on doing my Christmas shopping in Albury that day and while be travelling back that way, I'm in. I have to pick up my bike from work tomorrow anyway, since Pete dropped me straight home after the do today. So, more imbibing, in a much nicer environment than outside the Wangaratta Court custody cells - talk about primitive conditions. If people could see what custody is like, they'd be less inclined to demand people spend large amounts of time in it.

I also managed to get over to the post office and send off half my Christmas stuff, and get parcels for the rest. Crantz, Threnny, Acey, Mitai, Sass-Kitty and Azzy, expect something in a few weeks. The rest I'll get off tomorrow, or the next day, seeing how I'm getting CDs tomorrow. I know I'm going to miss the actual date of Christmas by quite a bit. But it's the thought that counts, neh?

On the Subject of Chrissie Pressies. :-)

You will be getting one from me. :) I'm gonna be shopping for the last of my Christmas stuff soon so I'll get it then. *grins* You probably won't get it by Christmas. :( Considering I'm in the States, but I'll send it off to you the moment I get home.

:) Have a great Christmas, mate. And a great New Year.
