Erin, my sister in law and I have been squeeing about this too. So can't wait, I hope it does the books justice. Supposedly it's going to be a TV series as well as a movie. I think the movie is meant to cover the first three books, or maybe just the first one.

In researching my article below, it's going to be a movie trilogy with a TV series covering the rest of the books.

I didn't think this would ever make it to film, I have a feeling it's going to be politically sensitive. John Marsden has always been somewhat coy about who the invaders were because he didn't want to encourage racism and xenophobic sentiment, he's said that a few times.

Although it's pretty obvious to me that it could only be one of two countries. In this film they will need to say who the invaders are, or at least show the ethnic make-up of the invading force and I think it's going be Chinese.

And yeah, it is politically sensitive, scouting around I found this recent interview of Marsden where he gets put on the spot with that question, and discussion about how it's perpetuating the yellow peril phobia in our culture.

Ooh. They announced this on ANZAC day, did they?

Haven't got around to reading the last few books, but read these in high school. Always thought that Marsden must've been under the impression that New Zealand actually had a defence force and not a series of follies. One of our troop ships actually got leased out to transport oranges around the Mediterranean. The latest is half a million dollars spent on bullets that won't work for our guns (they're sports rounds, not military rounds).

Ooh... this is quite interesting. Thanks for bringing it to my attention. I'll bet, though, that the reception from almost everyone else out there (as was mine) is that this is an Australian version of Red Dawn.

Time to research!

I hope that someone decides to bring this movie over to North America.

I actually counted both the Tomorrow series and the Ellie Chronicles, and have amended the article to note the same.

Thanks for the correction!

Oh my giddy god's pajamas, I haven't been this excited about a movie since X1 came out, for real reals. If it doesn't come out in north America, I'm going to be devastated.
