The Day Of Pointless Conflicts...

Ugh, I hate, hate, HATE intervention order days. I have yet to meet someone who doesn't. We had twenty of the damn things listed today, and in my opinion, that was fifteen too many.
Now, don't get me wrong. I think the legislation is a great idea - an order designed to protect the vulnerable and abused within some kind of relationship, be in husband/wife, parent/child, stalker/object of obsession. Intervention orders are needed to stop behaviour which is criminal any way, but which for whatever reason, isn't followed up by the police or the judicial system.
They are not for settling petty arguments. So many of the applications we get are piss weak, to be crude. Rubbish thrown over the fence. One or two phone calls last week. Someone looking at someone funny. But because of the serious nature of the legislation, we aren't allowed to tell people to "sod off and get a real life with real problems", to quote Paula today. These things are meant to stop a husband beating six kinds of shit out of his wife, not for settling a bitchfight between two school girls. And because we can't refuse applications - that's the magistrates' job, and they're reluctant to do that themselves - it wastes time and resources and Valium.
And people wonder why I get tired of fanfic politics - it's because I've usually spent the day listening to people argue over just as pointless things.
*grins* Now I've got that off my chest, time for some good news. :)
I was wandering through the karate club's website yesterday, and found by chance that Ben's farewell is on Saturday. And since I'm already going to be in Melbourne on Friday, thanks to that registrar's conference, I figured I might as well stay for the weekend: go to the farewell, maybe go to training Saturday morning (and get my butt kicked, in all likelihood, since I haven't trained for two months!), see Yasmin, *waves to Yas* and maybe even arrange a get together with Andraste. Bascially getting out and doing something social. I can't believe I didn't think of it earlier - money, I suppose - but Paula's got something on as well, so travelling back was going to be tricky any way; I booked my train trip back on Sunday during lunch today (the station is just across the road from work). I'm rather excited; I was having dreams about seeing the karate folks again last night. :)
The other good news is today I got my pay slip, and found that instead of paying me a full time rate (about $850 per fortnight), I'm actually getting paid part time rates for full time hours - about $920 for the fortnight. And I have another fortnight of full time to go. :) So there's my DexCon plane fare. *huge grin* It's a huge relief, and while I should probably save for a new computer, sod it, I wanna go see my friends.
Speaking of which, while I'm in Melbourne I'll have to book my ticket for Sydney. Seems like I'm going to be spending a lot of time sleeping on people's floors. ;)
Better go, I still have to pack some stuff. And mail Yasmin and Andraste - I've been off-line tonight, waiting for Wondermouse to call me back, but since she hasn't yet, I'll just have to sort out stuff while I'm down there.
