I'd chalked up the chronic aches in my joints and fever flashes and nausea of the past three days to a return tour of the Lurghi I've had for the past couple of weeks, but this morning when I got out of the shower I was covered in red spots. Not wanting to bother Mum (who was still asleep) and Dad (who is still pretty churned up over Sue's death adn not coping with any kind of stress), I went in to work. Upon consulting with my co-workers, I went down to the doctor, and heard the happy news.

I have the chicken pox.

Good news is I should be over it by the time I fly out. Other good news is that I have the rest of the week off work because I'm still contagious. Bad news is that I can't go home today until this afternoon because Pete and Paula are going to the funeral of a popular police officer who died of cancer last week, and we have a video link at 1pm that we couldn't reschedule. So I get to stick around and get payback on the unhealthy public I deal with who gave this to me in the first place. But I'm not a happy camper, no siree.

I seriously can't believe this. Of all the fucking times to get chicken pox, I had to get it eleven days before I'm due to fly out for Walkabout... Least I know I was actually feeling sick these past few days and not being a hypochondriac.

My sympathies... I picked it up for the second time (yes, the second time) the week before mid-terms my sophomore year at university. My advice: oatmeal baths, calomine lotion, take the medicine if they gave it to you (I got an anti-herpes drug), baby oil to anoint yourself after the frequent showers to ease the itching, and stay the hell away from anyone with a camera (my otherwise beloved father visited me at the dorms bearing flowers, tons of fruit, and a camera and I still have the picture). Also, pack yourself a little lotion tube for your Walkabout so you can treat the pox-marks after the scabs come off. Don't pick the scabs -- they really do scar.

Also, and here's the ugly part -- I had a very severe case, but anyone over the age of twelve has to be very wary of complications. It's not always shingles. I had four months of ear infections afterwards, for example.

Best of luck to you.

Baking Soda works well also.

Chicken pox? Eep. That's not good. Especially considering you're an adult. Well, at least you're not a male or pregnant, I guess.

I hear that Zovirax (Acyclovir) is useful if used within 24 hours after the first symptoms appear. Probably too late for that by now, though. Besides, it's supposed to be expensive.

*sympathetic look* Best stock up on calamine lotion and wrap up warmly. Hope you feel better by the end of the week.

*many hugs*

Hope you feel better as soon as possible. Just slather yourself in calamine lotion and then watch the Tour de France to try and take your mind off it. *dangles spandex-clad bike racers in front of you*

Good luck

My horrid cold and I are lurgying in sympathy with you - not as bad as CP but, you know, same concept.

No tips on how to get over it, I'm afraid. I had CP when I was about six so not many memories that are helpful there.

'Sides, by the time you get off that plane you won't be feeling anything but a fabulous case of jet-lag and too happy to care about anything else *g*.

Not a whole hell of a lot to say except take care of yourself, shiela, and make sure you're well as soon as is humanly possible. Hang in there. Other cliches.

Whoa. Now that is a turn of... well, I don't know.

Sounds like you've got the right attitude, though. Just imagine it's a preamble to your vacation.

And yes, lots of baths with baking soda. Calimine (sp?) lotion, too. Aveeno lotion with oatmeal (you guys got that there?).

Thinking of you, sweets. I know that you won't let a silly thing like the chicken pox stop you. Now the question is... where the heck did you get it? And what does the rooster have to say about that? :-)

Oh, my... Well, um. Not much comfort to add, but be wary of the pox on areas of skin you might otherwise forget -- inside ears, nostrils, eyelids, etc. Camomile is good. Also gloves. And try not to get a secondary infection, 'cause fever and itching together is no fun. Get well soon.

Eep! Yes. Good point. Chicken pox can become internal, especially in adults.

My family sends their best wishes too.
