Kicks and sticks and Cupcake Happies

Me waking up this morning resembled the rising of the undead - very slow, very reluctant, and with suitable lurching across the room to the shower.
Training last night - two and a half hours of major workout. Alex decided we advanced students needed to work on our leg strength and kicking (as one of the girls at work said this morning: "Does he know you ride a bike everywhere?"), so we indulged in an hour and a half of things like one-legged squats (with a handy wall for support), extending and holding side and back kicks for minutes at a time (you think this is easy, try leaning your back against a wall and stick your leg out, as high as you can. See how long you can hold it), and kick competition, which is basically sparring with no punches. I got a half-hour break by teaching the new students, but then Alex kept the black belts after class to work on what he calls "self defence sparring" - basically anything goes. Of course, all strikes and kicks etc are pulled, to avoid hurting the other person, but it also includes pressure points (and Alex has found one in my shoulder which just kills when he digs his thumb into it) and joint locks. By the end you end up rolling around on the floor, not my favourite self-defence manoever since I'm almost always out-weighed and vulnerable to getting pinned because of it, but we've discovered that throwing me on my back is not a good idea, since I automatically pull one knee up into a kick position. I pulled the kick, but the one I did (extremely carefully) under his chin as he came forward to pin me would have broken his neck if I'd landed it full force. You also get to use whatever's handy, so I also showed Alex that even after a two year break, you don't want to mess with me when I have an escrima stick in my hand.
Inventory the next day: some muscle stiffness (especially the abs - Alex has a nasty series of stomach muscle exercises), a few small bruises on my knees and wrists (Alex has quite a grip), slight bruise to the ear (I got clipped there), and fortunately, no pain in the left hip. It clicked out on me during all the kick stuff, but fortunately I was able to put it back in later at home whilst on the phone. Most amusing to the person I was talking to.
Next Wednesday is an escrima session, which means I get to bring my sticks to work. We're also having a social night - ie, we're going to the pub - and we'll have sticks still. Interesting. *grins* There's also going to be a regular escrima training 10-12 on Sundays after that, which is very good news, since I love this stuff.
Two messages on my phone when I got home last night. Bloody typical - the phone hasn't rung for a week and a half at least, and then everyone calls when I'm at training. *grins* One was Cupcake (alias [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com], with some great news. But since she hasn't said anything in her LJ yet, I'm not going to let the feline out of the sack. Needless to say I was up until midnight ("It's 11.30 mate, you should go to bed, you have work tomorrow" "Yeah, you're right. Hey, what do you think about..."), which accounts for the sluggishness this morning. And of course by that time I couldn't answer the other call. Must fire up the email...
For someone who spent last night in varying amounts of pain, I'm feeling pretty damn good. The dream run into work today on the bike also helped - I had one of those rides where every light goes your way, which meant I was able to just fly down Royal Parade. Blitzed through the Grattan Street intersection (on a green light, of course - I'm not insane!), which gave me a good head start on the Roundaobout From Hell (I'm sure Crowley had something to do with this one), and picked the perfect gap when I need to change lanes near the market. Gave the driver who let me in a cheery little thumbs up as thanks. :) Got to work in fifteen minutes, which is pretty good considering the how stiff I was when I started. And there's nothing like a bike ride to work out that stiffness, either.
Oh, and added happiness to look forward to - [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com] got the Moby tickets for the show on the 25th. I get to see Moby! Whee! *waves to [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com]

Hee...
Date: 2003-03-14 10:33 am (UTC)We did the opposite of your workout. Instead of kick sparring with no hand techniques, we did hand sparring with no kick techniques. :) And anything-goes sparring is a good thing, as long as you have the control for it. Out on the street, point sparring isn't going to do you a lot of good.
And yay for "dem sticks", as one of my TKD buddies calls it. :)
Sounds like things are going pretty well for you. Yay Rossi! *grin*
