... or possibly it's the warmth returning to my legs and ears.

Note to self, when you're going to be spending any longer than fifteen minutes outside on a day it's -6 degrees, wear your damn hat. And the gloves. And possibly investigate the usefulness of another layer under your jeans. Although the scarf mum knitted me? Is long enough to become quite an effective head wrap.

Any way, was out of the house by 12, having also dumped the garbage on the way. Photocopied ten copies of my resume and began the Great Bloor Street Job Search, which involved overcoming my sheer terror at the thought of going in and asking if they were hiring (thanks to PERIN and goodness knows how many failed interviews, I'm a tad phobic of the whole job searching thing these days. However, jobs shall not be handed to me, so I have to go out and get one) and managed to leave resumes at various places. I don't expect to hear from most, but I do have an interview tomorrow at one of the bakeries looking for a counter hand or dishwasher (I said both, but I know what I'd prefer!) and another coffee shop was fairly interested and will be calling.

So, places I've left stuff:

Chapters.
Flight Centre (they were recruiting, I don't expect much from this tho')
Bread & Roses (that's the interview tomorrow)
Coffeeworld (that's the keen one)
Book City
The Body Shop.

Not many, I know, but there's not a lot of hiring going on lately - I dallied too long and missed the Christmas intake. However, Bread & Roses I should be able to talk my way into. Tomorrow I do the other side of Bloor Street. ;)

I also mailed off a bunch of Christmas cards (not yours [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com] since you didn't reply to my email asking for your addy!), a couple of parcels and headed down to the Health Care Card place in the hopes of them accepting the letter sent with my Social Insurance Number as proof of residence. No dice. *sighs* It's a bank statement or nothing. This kind of demoralised me, so I caught the train back to Jane (the place is about half an hour to a hour's walk from home, which I did on the way there and got plenty of winter sun and nearly froze my ears off), stopped at the falafel place for lunch (so good!), and grabbed various things from the Shopper's Mart, which is like Priceline in Australia; shampoo, conditioner, bubble bath since I miss my bubbles, and a wrist brace since the gym work is aggravating my old cycling injury.

Note to readers: In my first year of living in Melbourne, way back in 1989, I was cycling back home from university when someone ran a red light in front of me and I collided with his door. The force of impact threw me off and this being prior to karate training, I fell badly, putting out my hand to catch myself and doing something to my wrist. I couldn't use it for about a week, got it x-rayed (no break) and then one morning I woke up to find it was fine - my best guess is that I dislocated it and managed to click it back in, but there's residual tendon damage and I can't support my weight on it in the standard push up position - I spent my karate years doing push-ups on my fingers.

I took my camera with me, although I managed all of one photo. I'm wanting another snow fall before I got to High Park and take some more. Then there shall be the pictorial post of Toronto living. There's flurries expected over the next few days, so with any luck, I'll have that before the weekend.

Any way, small achievements today. I'm feeling a hell of a lot better.

Final note to self: Stop expecting too much of yourself, okay? You're allowed time to settle.

At -6 degrees Celsuis, I am still walking around in a tank top, hoodie, and sneakers. O.o

The only time I really start bundling up is -15 or more. And -30 to -45 is when you don't just bundle, but avoid being out altogether lest you start to burn and lose extremities.

You'll climatized in no time. :)

Scarves are the perfect winter wear. You can wrap them babushka-style and keep your head almost completely warm, minus the eye area (damn need for sight...) Ahh, cold weather... it was -21 in Calgary when I went to school this morning. :)

Job hunting is SCARY. And yes. You are allowed to settle. You did something that I would be petrified to do. Settling is necessary.

Hm. One of my good friends in Toronto for school works at Starbucks (we are apparently job twins, I s'pose), and I believe they're usually hiring, especially if you're looking for something to placehold? Or if you're looking for something with some upward mobility ~ you have work experience, so you'd probably get promoted up the ranks a little faster. It DOES require some "hmm, not looking at the big corporation I'm working for, lalala" but I could ask my friend if they need anyone? Or know of anyone near you who does?

I have trained you well, my padawan.

*grins*

(Dude, you're actually doing pretty fabulously, and you know it.)

Ahh, no worries ~ I also have a friend who worked at Second Cup, if you want interview / applications tips eventually. (The life of a university student ~ all my friends have these menial jobs at somewhat evil coffee stores. *wry grin*) I totally understand structure - need too much of it myself, sometimes.

That failure feeling is an absolute bitch, I know. But remember that you've moved a couple thousand kilometres and across the dateline, and you're ALLOWED to get accustomed to the new place, complete with long johns (ack, no, I'd rather suffer and usually do) and stylish winter accessories (more my speed *g*). ;)

The secret to surviving the NA winter: layering.

As in (on -30 windchill days):

t-shirt
ordinary shirt
sweater
down parka
UW
long UW
pants
socks
oversocks
insulated boots
gloves
hat
scarf

When you have to wear these indoors, you know that Things have become dire.

Bread & Roses and Chapters? Hello, lovely (NOT)commute. :)

And yes--allow yourself time to settle, please? *hugs*

Nrrggh.

It went mid-20s mid 20s BOOM 30+ and at least 60% humidity for the last two days - now three, it's 30C at 9:30am.

Thank all that is holy for airconditioned work environments...

42.8 degrees at our place today. I have a hospital box full of dehydrated bats at the moment and a fan going full-one beside me.

Wanted to stay in the snuggy cool air-conditioning at work, but fretted about (a) baby bat and (b) mouth bloody sore, so I went home as late as I could manage.

Summer sucks sometimes.

PS G'luck on the job hunt and all. Hmmm, Bread & Roses - they do a wicked toasted bagel and cream cheese. After my last few days all-soup diet, this is sounding like sufficient provender that I would work for them for little more than pennies.

Why is it Sydney out-hots us so much... ;) That just doesn't seem right, somehow.

(I have just spent an inordinate amount of time on BOM, and have come to the conclusion that you get hotter, we just don't get cooler, so our average is hotter. Does that make any sense at all?)

*ahem* Yes, anyway. Not that it's unusual to wake up as hot as when you went to sleep.

Sorry about that! I haven't been online since Monday, when the email got there and I just got it now.

If it was an earlier one you were talking about, I'm really sorry but I don't seem to have gotten it. Sorry.

Layers are your Friend. I love longjohns, they're a must if you want to wear jeans in winter. Silk next to the skin works, too.

Also, lots of places hire right up to Christmas week, so I'm sure you'll find something. People go crazy and they need to replace them. :D

*snug* Good luck. :)

Small acheivements are good. It's very interesting, reading about how you're settling in. Are the shops on Bloor all on the bit that's near the apartment, or futher into town?

Wrap up!

Ah, yes. I remember now why it took me so long to leave my dorm in Toronto. It's not just "wallet, keys, phone"; it's "wallet, keys, phone, hat, scarf, gloves, layers, layers, layers..." *grin*

Just be careful crossing the street, eh? The compacted ice/snow is MUCH less pretty and soft when you're falling on it.
